And you think, but why? You can’t pinpoint any reason for anxiety on this perfectly mundane Tuesday morning but it’s there, and no amount of rationalising will shift it.
For years I struggled with the same thing. At its worst, it was panic attacks at random moments, unrelated to what I perceived could be stressing me out – on the train, on a Sunday afternoon at home, during work…
And that was something to actually be anxious about!
Having zero control over when these terrifying (not to mention embarrassing) moments would strike made me worry about going anywhere or doing anything.
What if I had a panic attack in a client meeting? While I was driving?
This vicious loop, where anxiety starts in our body, but then progresses to ANXIETY ABOUT ANXIETY – is debilitating, and you may still be stuck in it for the same reason I was.
That is, most traditional therapies target your thoughts OR your body, not both.
Addressing your thoughts through things like talk therapy is important, but it doesn’t actually foster a true sense of safety in your body.
See, your body needs to experience feeling safe in order to trust what your rational mind is telling it.
Using medications or other calming supplements can also temporarily make us feel less anxious, but equally, they don’t address the thought patterns or subconscious beliefs that are keeping us stuck feeling unsafe.
I know that is possible to break out of the cycle of waiting for the next anxiety or panic attack to strike, and feeling the toll this takes on your body, your relationships, your life – because I did.
